A Paris court has found ten individuals guilty of cyberbullying Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, in a landmark ruling that underscores France’s growing resolve to combat online harassment.
The defendants—eight men and two women—were convicted of spreading false and defamatory claims regarding Brigitte Macron’s gender and sexuality, as well as posting degrading and malicious remarks about the 24-year age difference between her and the French president. Prosecutors argued that the coordinated online attacks were deliberate, sustained, and intended to cause personal harm.
During the proceedings, the court heard how the accused used social media platforms to circulate rumors and insults that went far beyond legitimate public debate or criticism. The presiding judge stated that the comments were not merely offensive opinions but constituted targeted harassment, marked by a “clear desire to do harm” and to undermine the dignity of the First Lady.
Most of the convicted individuals received suspended prison sentences of up to eight months, reflecting the seriousness of the offenses while stopping short of immediate incarceration. In addition to criminal penalties, several defendants were sanctioned with the suspension of their social media accounts, limiting their ability to continue abusive behavior online.
